Poynton High School PTA Theatre trips began as the result of an idea for a social night out for parents and
students that might have the added benefit of raising a little money for PTA funds. Our first trip was to see
Mamma Mia at the Palace Theatre in January 2007. The trip was so popular and successful that many more
followed and there have now been more than 200 trips to theatres in the region. We visit the Palace Theatre,
the Opera House, the Lowry, the Royal Exchange and the Bridgewater Hall, offering a wide range of productions
including plays, comedies, musicals, contemporary ballet and concerts in order to appeal to a variety of tastes.

Initially the trips were just advertised to parents and students but an article in the Poynton Post brought them
to the attention of the wider community. We are indebted to the Poynton Post who used to publish
details of the trips each month and to everyone who has spread the word to friends, family and neighbours.

The trips are open to anyone; you do not have to have a connection to the school. Most people taking part
are adults: any students must be accompanied by their parents. We reserve seats for shows that we think will
be popular and the theatres give us a few weeks to sell the tickets. We then confirm which tickets we want
and pay for them, any unsold ones are released back to the theatre. We get a group discount which means
that we can often offer the ticket and transport by coach from the High School for the usual price of the ticket
alone. There is usually less discount on the big or newer shows so we sometimes have to add a little to the
ticket price. However you do not have to pay any booking fees or travel and parking costs. Should any money
be left over, after the tickets and transport have been paid for, it goes into our PTA funds. Hopefully this is a
win-win situation for everyone.

In 2012 we branched out and organised our first mini break to Windsor and Buckingham Palace. These little breaks
have also proved very popular, we now have two or three a year and have visited destinations including Bath and
the Cotswolds, the Chelsea Flower Show, Edinburgh, Highgrove and Oxford, Cambridge, Sandringham and Lincoln,
Northumberland, Suffolk, Kent and also had wonderful day trips on the Orient Express train Northern Belle.

In 2016 we embarked on tours of our local venues and have had interesting behind the scenes visits to the
Bridgewater Hall, Palace Theatre, Royal Exchange, Media City and the Opera House.

In 2020 we expanded our repertoire to include day trips and have had enjoyable outings to various places including
Bodnant Garden and Llandudno, Powis Castle, The Lake District, Halifax for the Piece Hall and Shibden Hall,
RHS Harlow Carr, Port Sunlight and Ness Gardens and Skipton Christmas Market.

From the beginning the trips have been organised by Elaine Roe, a Maths teacher and PTA committee member at
the High School for over twenty years. Elaine is now retired but continues to run the trips on behalf of the PTA.
